The higher incidence, severity, and duration of power outages in recent years have increased the demand for "power insurance" among homeowners who are not able to or not interested in using backup electric generators. They may include older adults aging in place, owners of two or more homes, and individuals operating home-based businesses.
While electric generators offer a well-known backup option, their disadvantages include: (a) high cost of fuel, (b) access to fuel supply during a loss of grid power, (c) required annual maintenance, (d) carbon footprint, (e) air pollution, and (d) high noise level.
Furthermore, lives are lost every year due to fuel-spill fires and carbon monoxide poisoning from poorly maintained and improperly used portable generators that are brought indoors.
